Cronenberg's CRASH - 1996

This movie is hard to write about. Certainly one of the most controversial productions ever made, the experience of watching Crash lives up to its reputation. The unique erotic atmosphere created is sometimes so strangely powerful that I found myself wondering if what I am watching is maybe closer to pornography than anything else.
The main concept of the film is the FETISH. I felt an intention of presenting modern-day technology and the extreme interest of the public towards it as an obsession. Cronenberg imagined a world where cars and especially car accidents are perceived as extreme thrills by some people. The relationship between mankind and machines is a preferred topic of the director. Just imagine watching accidents instead of porn (I associated this kind of addiction to the concept of snuff films).

So, who dares to watch?

  1. What surprised me the most is how Cronenberg manages to create a narrative using only sex scenes. In this way, the film is very close to pornography, but Cronenberg goes beyond that. Reading your thoughts about the movie, I think you're correct when you say that there is an intention of presenting the interest in modern day technology as an obsession. And it should be noted that Crash was made way before Apple became something like a cult.
Despite everything, I think Naked Lunch is an even stranger experience. Have you seen it? Cronenberg is one of my favorite filmmakers, even his most flawed films (e.g. Cosmopolis) have something powerful and unique.

    1. Hi, Simental :). I haven't seen Naked Lunch, but I will definitely watch it soon and maybe write some thoughts on it. To tell you the truth, Cronenberg is not amongst my personal favourite directors, but nevertheless, I can't ignore the strangeness and impact of his movies, can't help to watch them... Thanks for your thoughts!
